Moon Day, Leo 18th, 576CÆ, Year of the Tiger

The party arrived in Saltmere to find the southern quarter burned and the surviving population making a stand in the northeast. Aodh macc Brann met them at the barricade.
His account: three weeks prior, two men entered a structure discovered under the tanner's house during cellar excavation and did not come back. That evening creatures emerged and killed the tanner's wife and eldest son. The following night they took the butcher and his child. Aodh posted six guards; the creatures killed all of them. One guard lived long enough to report that he recognized faces in the attacking horde. Aodh burned the tanner's house to seal the entry point. Two days of quiet followed. Then the creatures returned through a cleft on the far side of the promontory and have not stopped since.
The ghouls attacked that night on schedule. Arrows had no effect. Rathar engaged with his spear. One ghoul broke through the line and killed Cairkull before he could react. Wulfweard killed two with his bow and turned the balance. The attack ended. Aodh passed his wineskin. The party slept four hours.
At dawn the village began fortifying. Spikes along the outer palisade. Additional spikes on the inner parapet for anything that crests the wall. Townsfolk with improvised spears and slings positioned on top. One jar of lamp oil held in reserve.
